Residents take pleasure in the local amenities of historic downtown Mendham, dining at the Black Horse Inn, the local gathering place that’s been serving good food and drink since 1742, or shopping at one of the many boutiques catering to a discerning clientele.
Dining and Entertainment
Nearby Morristown offers 5-star dining and upscale shopping along with theatre, comedy clubs, coffee houses and other entertainment. Antique shows, cat shows and dog shows, and other specialized interest programs are annual events, as is First Night, the area-wide celebration of the New Year.

Morristown National Historical Park welcomes visitors to tour George Washington’s Headquarters and to witness the encampment conditions of the soldiers at Jockey Hollow, or to celebrate July 4th with a costumed reenactment of the original town square readings of the Declaration of Independence.
With New York City in close proximity, residents take advantage of Broadway shows, opera, ballet, museums and other world-class cultural, sporting and entertainment activities.

Sports
Golf enthusiasts can stay local and happy with the many public and private courses and country clubs available in the area, while bicyclists and hikers enjoy the leisurely to challenging trails meandering through the area’s large park system.
Mennen Sports Arena provides 3 skating surfaces for year-round skating and hockey and has added an indoor football schedule with seating for 2,500 to its roster of activities.
The Far Hills Race Meeting
The Far Hill Race Meeting continues the time-honored tradition of race day begun in 1914 when its precursor, the Essex Fox Hounds, began an annual race day to thank the farmers and landowners on whose property they held their fox hunts.
Today the Far Hills Race Meeting is a preeminent social event, drawing crowds of 50,000 or more to witness the finest steeplechase racing in the country, including the most prominent race, the Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase. The 2018 races are scheduled for October 20, 2008. Proceeds will benefit the Somerset Medical Center.

Mendham Township offers a choice of premier private schools. Among the private schools are Far Hills Country Day School, Delbarton, St. Elizabeth’s, Pingry, Gill St. Bernard, and the Morristown Beard School. Montessori schools are also well represented. |
